Frankenstein: Novel vs. Movie

The movie and book of Frankenstein were both very good to read and watch! While there were very many similarities, which I liked, there were also very many differences. Scenes were changed in the movie that were different in the book and sometimes whole scenes that were cut from the book that weren’t in the movie. Overall, in my opinion, the book was much better than the movie.

Differences such as; in the book, Victor agrees to create a female for the monster so he will leave to be with her forever. But, in the movie, Victor never created a female for the monster. Instead, when Elizabeth was killed, Victor rushed with her to the lab to bring her back to life. When the monster showed up, he was asking for Elizabeth to become his and leave Victor. Things like this I just don’t understand why they were changed or left out.

In conclusion, I would have preferred the movie to go right along with the book because it would have been so much better. I don’t know if these cuts or changes were made because of budget problems but a lot more effort should have been put into making this movie better. In my opinion, this is how I feel about the movie compared to the book.

Who is the Actual Monster in Frankenstein?

The novel Frankenstein written by Mary Shelley is a book about an eager scientist, Victor Frankenstein, who goes against all laws of human nature to create this creature that he soon learns there are consequences for. Thinking hi creation of man will be such a huge success, he immediately questions what he has done. As the novel is set up as a frame story, it goes on this adventure of Victor Frankenstein trying to hide his creation from everyone. But, when trouble strikes and the monster begins killing the ones closest to Victor, Victor begins to blame himself for it all.

Victor Frankenstein is the true monster in the novel. He continuously shows monster like characteristics by being selfish and unnatural. Victor, as some may not see it, is a very selfish person. One example would include when murders, like the one of his brother, takes place, Victor knows exactly who the actual murderer is but withholds this knowledge and in the end causes an innocent woman to be killed. “Life and death appeared to me ideal bounds, which I should first break through, a poor torrent of light into our dark world” (Shelley 51). This section from the book shows Victor’s motivation to find out everything possible to be able to bring this creature to life which is not living but immortal and not natural.

Not only was Victor selfish and unnatural but this also led into hostility and abandonment. Starting from the very instant his creation became alive and on throughout the book, Victor instantly became very hostile towards his creation. The biggest time this hostility shows is when the creature becomes “alive”, Victor is almost immediately horrified in the appearance and what he had done which then led to abandonment. Hostility also shows when Victor destroyed the female creation for the monster which killed any chance of companionship. And lastly, abandonment of not only the creature but also his family. Victor leaves behind his family, including Elizabeth for countless years to work on a project he was soon also going to try and leave behind. Instead of teaching the creature and helping him adjust to this new world has had just become a part of, Victor leaves him to fend for himself and detests him.

Though some may think the creature is the actual monster in the novel, Frankenstein, if anything, shows the exact characteristics a monster would have. If you ever noticed in the novel, all the real monster wanted was to have someone to love him and befriend him but not even his own creator could do so! Frankenstein did everything he could to pretend the creation never happened but of course with this, karma came back and the monster made known that he was still around and watching Victor. Altogether, the creation didn’t show any real harm until Frankenstein started showing these traits of selfishness, unnatural, hostility, and abandonment. This overall makes Victor be seen as the true monster in the novel.

Valentine’s Day Debate

Valentine’s Day, February 14th, is an emblematic holiday that represents a day of romance and the overt love some have for others. It was created after a Roman Festival called Lupercalia. Named after Saint Valentine, there were many that played huge roles in this holiday of love. One gregarious “Saint Valentine was sentenced to death when Emperor Claudius II banned couples from being married” (History of Valentines Day, video). He saw Valentine as a degenerate for secretly marrying these couples behind his back which is why his existence was demisedOn February 14th, this valentine genre of people exchange cards, candy, flowers and many other gifts for their special someone or “valentine”. According to Bet You Didn’t Know, “220 million roses are prepared for Valentine’s Day for couples to buy”.

Valentine’s Day can be a diabolical holiday for some that don’t have a valentine or just hate love altogether. In my opinion, Valentine’s Day is a holiday that isn’t really necessary. The meaning of the holiday puts a lot of pressure of significant others to express their love for one another when they should actually be showing it everyday. According to Bet You Didn’t Know, “20 million dollars is usually spent altogether just on Valentine’s Day alone”. Instead of splurging a whole bunch of money just on one day, you can just save the money and break the money out throughout the year. “Celebrating Valentine’s Day is a curse for people who are single” (8 Reasons, Ali). Another reason why Valentine’s Day should just be skipped or forgotten about is because some don’t have a valentine at all! It can be sad and lonely causing them to hate the holiday and hope to feign it isn’t real and they don’t have to deal with it.

Though some believe Valentine’s Day is a pointless holiday that should be banned or forgotten about, there are some people that believe it is a day they can express themselves and make others feel loved. Along with these vehement pro-valentine couples, others like teachers use Valentine’s Day for their children to have a chance to make other friends. Children have this day to buy candy and little notes from the store to pass out to everyone in their class and make friends with others. This methodical holiday happens every year so whether you love it or hate it, its coming around the corner again soon.

Scientific Revolution

The 1700s was a period in time when new inventions really took off. Many of these inventions for some scientists created fruition in working correctly and becoming a useful item. Other fruitless inventions though did not seem to work out and just didn’t make it anywhere. The peregrination of the scientific revolution started first off with the people in the time period. According to the video, Turning Points in History, these new inventions changed the way people looked at the world. Scientists began to replace belief with logic which not too many people wanted to believe. Inventors were also “tried” for their ideas during this new enlightenment age by not receiving much support (Turning Points in History).

Chuck Hall created an invention that would help many people and potentially even save lives. In an aggregate portfolio, the ideas for the 3D printer were storming. 3D printers are an idyllic invention that are can be used to help in surgeries to make things like bones or also to build houses in a quick amount of time. Hall says, “When some of those surgeries were first done using the help of our technology, it was really touching for me”. I believe the author put this quote in the article to show how much Hall’s invention means to him that he created something that could help save many lives. Though Hall is very proud of his creation, he is also very humble. He says, “It’s nice to get some recognition, it was a lot of hard work but other than that I just keep working”. The author puts this quote in to show that Hall does appreciate the support he is getting for his accomplishment but, this isn’t going to change anything for him and he is still just going to continue to work on the printer to keep improving it.

Thanks these inventions that have been made to better help us, we still use them today. Inventions like the 3D printer have shaped technology and made us able to achieve much more than we could have ever thought. I personally want to have a career in the medical field so knowing we have this invention that has been used successfully and can be used again and again, I am excited and maybe one day I will be able to use this creation and maybe with no egregious mistakes in the future.

Teen Challenges

There is a really common problem that is being continued to be seen in schools. This problem is referred to bullying. It seems that some kids just cannot find their way out of being made fun of by these degenerate bullies. According to a Bullying Statistics article, “Bullying includes behaviors that focus on making someone else feel inadequate, or focus on belittling someone else”. There are many different genres of bullying that goes around. Some examples include, verbal, physical, emotional and cyber. These bullying ways can transfigure they way people feel about themselves, leading into further situations like depression. According to an article on Stop Bullying, “most youth who are bullied do not have thoughts of suicide or engage in suicidal behaviors”.

“Statistics show that 30% of teenagers were either being bullied or played the role of a bully” (Bullying Statistics, 8). These stats are starting to rise with more usage of our children using the internet. With this, bullying has also shown a nascent in school shootings. An article written by No Bullying, states, “75 percent of school shootings have been linked to harassment and bullying against the shooter”. This is just one example that shows bullying could be the possible cause of other things like school shootings or even something simpler like depression.

This topic really hit close to come by connecting with my own cognate bullying experience in the past. Middle school was terror for me. It was hard to escape the bullying because I didn’t think it would ever stop so it just kept eating at me. Though there is no way to absolutely escape bullying, there are things we can engender to prevent it from happening or escalating.

Fake News

Image

Fake News is a type of media that has been going around for years trying to incite readers into believing the possible worst or best of someone. This type of news is not true but actually “made-up stuff, masterfully manipulated to look like credible journalistic reports that are easily spread online” (Holan, 2). The recent Presidential Election is just one example of many fake news targets that are circulating today that also shows the celerity of how fake news spreads. This turbulent fake news has caused some to lose their jobs. For example, a previous Davidson College Graduate, Cam Harris, was said to have seen that Donald Trump, early in the election, was falling behind in polls and “Harris sat down at the kitchen table in his apartment and created a fake story that was eventually shared with 6 million people” (Marusak, 6).

Though Fake News has been around for a long time, numbers and stats according to the authors of these articles have spiked within recent years. This bad information has always lived online but did you know, “In 2016, most viral lies spread on Facebook” (Holan, 16). There are 1.79 billion people that use Facebook around the world that are becoming turbid due to this cogent fake news that is being spread. By everyone wanting to read more into this fake news, some are starting to realize this could be a good way for one to make money from. It has been said in one article that, “A man running a string of fake news sites from the Los Angeles suburbs told NPR he made between $10,000 and $30,000 a month” (Holan, 22).

Fake News can be hard to avoid and assay, we should remember not to believe absolutely everything we see online. Instead, to save so much false information from spreading around, we need to learn how to check the facts. In my opinion, if you see something online that may not make a lot of sense, look into it! Study it! Find out more about what you’re actually reading so when your friend comes up to you talking about all this fake stuff they’re believing online, you can tell them what really happened.
